Sunday Cinema Revelation II: Children of the Corn

So, its late Sunday afternoon meaning its time for Charlotte and I to catch a horrifically bad 80's movie (we don't like sports, we like this). So, I passed some movie with Linda Hamilton and that guy who used to be on thirtysomething, driving through corn, and realized it was Children of the Corn. It occurred to me all of a sudden, that Draco Malfoy really looks remarkably like one of the children of the corn who somehow escaped into the wrong movie... then as the movie proceeded, I found something out. Everyone just THINKS the children of the corn are all freaky blonde kids. Turns out, they are all just freaky regular kids. After much googling, and running across false Children of the Corn blondie references, I feel the need to set the record straight. The Children of the Corn aren't blonde, but the Village of the Damned kids most definitely are. Not only that, but that movie (which is from 1995 and, incidentally, apparently stars not only Kirstie Alley and Christopher Reeves, but also the lady from Crocodile Dundee) is actually a remake of a waaay older movie from the 60s, which I'm pretty sure I'm going to need to netflix, based on this picture from the wikipedia page. There. That should set the record straight.

Featured Etsy Seller: Skookum Handmade

Today I'm going to feature a fellow Etsier. I'm reeeaalllly excited about this one, because I somehow found this cutting board in my browsings, and immediately fell madly in love with it. Its made of a variety of recycled woods. I really wanted it, and would go back and 'visit' it periodically, but somehow its the kind of thing I would never actually end up buying for myself.

BUT! After I saw it, I mentioned that I wanted it and a very wonderful certain someone remembered that, found it and got it for me!! He just gave it to me today, and now I'm just admiring it :). You can see it here... I love the combinations of the different kinds of wood and everything. So awesome!!

This is the shop... Skookum Handmade

And this is my beautiful cutting board!

The Great Muffin Caper

Ok, so technically, this did not happen all that recently... this news is approximately 6 months old, and I've spread it around a lot. But, it is my favorite story, and I really feel like its can only be done justice when photos are involved, which means that I now feel justified in inflicting it on this blog.

So. I have a confession.

I like english muffins. A lot.

So, when I was having some delicious soup for dinner, what did I want to have to go with it? An english muffin! but of course. What could be better. I had recently purchased a delicious pack
age of wheaty muffins, and had eaten one the day before. While heating the soup, I went to the package to get out the second muffin, but something was amiss. Initially, I thought maybe there was something strange going on, like an accident at the muffin factory.

(oh, so naive)

Then, with a rush of horror I realized, there was not an accident, not at all. Someone... (wait for it...)... SOMEONE had gotten to my muffins before I had (now, bear in mind other than my little tub o'love Charlotte, I live alone).

This someone didn't just "get to" the muffins... this someone TOOK A BITE OUT OF my muffin. Like, took it out of the pack at the store, took a giant bite, and then decided 'eh! not for me'.

WHAT!?!?

Who does that? Like really really who? (and further, what kind of security is going on at Ralphs that would enable this scandal to pass unnoticed).

Not Your Grandma's Pearl Earrings

So, a while ago someone asked me to make her a pearl necklace for her med-school interviews. I've never really done much with pearls, because I figured most pearl necklaces look pretty much the same, I don't actually know how to properly knot pearls anyways, and there just wasn't a lot to do with them. But I made a basic necklace, and I ended up with some extras and... yeah, so it turns out I was totally wrong.

The result is, I have now made it my mission to make a series of totally non-boring non-conventional pearl earrings. I love it! Pearls are actually kind of fun, they have a really pretty texture and shine, and there is just something different about them. (you can see some of the earrings here and here). Hmm, maybe I'm tapping into my inner Jackie-O? Nah, she'd never wear these... ;)

Ode to: Cinema of the 80's

Here is something to add to my list. Its Sunday night, its been a lazy day, and Charlotte and I are lounging on the couch, enjoying one of the best movies of all time. Yes, its true, Overboard is on. I genuinely love it, and may or may not have been known to get teary in the final scene when Goldie Hawn (in an evening gown) and Kurt Russell (in a flannel shirt) jump of their boats, swim towards each other, and make out floating around wearing life jackets. I mean seriously- how much better does it conceivably get?

The thing that I find really amazing, is that after all these years (and many, many screenings) only on this viewing have I noticed a striking and somewhat bizarre similarity with one of my other all time favorites, Big Business-- namely that they both inexplicably rely on mini-golf for a major romantic plot point. Unfortunately, during my time spent in the late 80's I apparently remained entirely oblivious to the full range of possibilities mini-golf had to offer...

ps. If somehow you have gotten this far without seeing either one of these fantastic pieces of cinematography, you need to netflix them immediately. Seriously, just do it.

Ode to: Spicy Thai Potato Chips

I have decided that, since I can post about whatever I want, I am going to make a giant list of things I think are awesome. Since I can also put things where-ever I want, I believe that it will be an actual list that will go on the left side over there once I get myself organized. So. Keep your eye out. Number one on my list is my favorite find of the summer... Kettle Chips Spicy Thai Potato Chips.

I can't decide how to best express their awesomeness, so I believe I will attempt it via haiku
(hold on to your hats):

Crunchy spicy sweet

Fried potato yummy

Eat the last small crumbs

Now, keep your eye's peeled for new additions to the list... coming soon...

Super awesome first sale necklace

This necklace has a special place in my heart. Partly because I just really liked it, and thought the beads were cool (although, the idea of using something with words I can't read always makes me a bit nervous... hopefully it didn't say anything in particular). But, the real reason is that this was my first sale on etsy! Getting the email about this was what lead me to dance around my office for a while (thank goodness for office mates who work from home!) and then proceed to gloat for the rest of the day. Obviously I've managed to get over myself by now, but its still an awesome feeling to get those emails!!

(Not so?) Little Cat

Well, as long as I'm getting going, introducing things, blah blah blah, I better get this out of the way. This stunning creature is Charlotte, my affectionate, drooly, slightly tubby cat. The main reason this is of great import is that, other than many many drafts of pictures of jewelry, pictures of Charlotte are responsible for using up the other half of my camera batteries. If only she won't so photogenic, I might be able to resist her charms. Here you can see her modeling two of her favorite poses ("Superman Charlotte" and "Cat in a Bag")... we watch a lot of America's Next Top Model re-runs together, so she gets a lot of tips.
.(Charlotte came from Kitten Rescue, which you can check out here)

Silver Moon Necklace

Here's another old one... (well, semi-old, or something like that). I found these silver tube beads in the jewelry district in downtown LA and could never quite figure out what to do with them. I also had these mother of pearl squares lying around, and had used up about half of them but wasn't sure what to do with the rest. Finally one day, after a little free time spent digging around in half-forgotten supplies, I came up with this. Now that its all together, I can't believe I hadn't thought of it earlier... the silver and the mother of pearl look perfect together. It's so shimmery and elegant, but also so simple, its definitely one of my favorites.

Fairy Glen Necklace

Since this is all brand new, I'm going to start the crafty side of things by showing some of my favorite stuff already in my shop, then eventually move on to newer pieces as I come up with them...

I got the idea for this necklace (or, the initial seed of an idea) last fall on a trip to New York. I had a day to myself while my friends were at work, and spent it wandering around the village. I found this funky antique store, and there was a basket of individual chandelier prisms at the counter. They seemed like they were itching to be made into something, so I made myself a necklace. I've never made anything out of vintage/antique materials before, and I loved it! I wished I had kept the info on the shop so I could have ordered more, but ended up finding some elsewhere on etsy, and this is what came out of it! This necklace is one of my favorites. Its made of dark wooden beads with the prism in the center... I like that its a combination of the really plain wood beads and the sparkly pendant. It reminds me of some scene from some old painting of people having a evening picnic in the woods (yep, cheezy, I know, but what can I say). I tried to think of a name that captured that... this is not quite it, but its close! I also have 3 more prisms, so, I'm sure they will be making an appearance soon!

Inaugural Post

Well... this is my first foray into the world of blogging, and exposing myself for all the readers of the interwebs to see...

its partly to promote my etsy shop (which is linked all over the place on here, but this is it again:
http://www.yellowfish.etsy.com), and partly because I'm convinced that if you pay enough attention life is pretty hilarious, and when hilarious things happen the best thing to do is immediately run around and tell everyone you can find. So, here it goes!
